What do minor 11 sound like?

Wide, cool water — stacked fourths inside give the m11 a suspended, open quality. It is the m9 with the ceiling removed.

How are they built?

A minor 9 plus the 11th: root, ♭3, 5, ♭7, 9, 11. On piano you almost never play all six — the practical voicing keeps root, ♭3, ♭7, 9, 11.

What is their job in a progression?

A modal tonic (Dorian vamps live on im11) and a ii chord so complete it already contains most of the V's notes — jazz players sometimes skip the V entirely.

Where you'll hear them

"So What"-style modal jazz, gospel worship pads, Alicia Keys-style ballad openings, and any groove that needs to feel endless.

The beginner mistake

Including the 5th AND all extensions in one fist — six adjacent-ish notes turn to soup. Choose: the open quartal spread (root-11-♭7-♭3) or the compact top (♭3-♭7-9-11).

Fingering logic

Voiced as fourths, the hand opens naturally: 1-2-3-5 over the quartal spread keeps each finger a fourth apart — wider than thirds but perfectly even.
