What do minor 6 sound like?

Elegant, noir, slightly dangerous — minor with one bright note (the major 6th) glinting inside it. Think spy themes and tango.

How are they built?

A minor triad plus a MAJOR 6th: root, minor 3rd, perfect 5th, major 6th. The raised 6th against the minor 3rd creates its signature bite.

What is their job in a progression?

A strong minor tonic (im6 ends minor tunes with more style than a bare triad) and the classic iv6 in minor cadences. The 6th is also the root of a half-diminished chord in disguise.

Where you'll hear them

"Besame Mucho" endings, James Bond's final chord, gypsy jazz, and any film cue that needs minor to sound seductive instead of sad.

The beginner mistake

Flattening the 6th "because the chord is minor". The 6th must stay MAJOR — a minor 6th on top just doubles the ♭6 color of the key and loses the sparkle.

Fingering logic

Same 1-2-3-5 frame as minor 7 — only the top note moves up a half step to the 6th, so practice switching m7↔m6 without re-forming the lower three fingers.
