Sus 2 on Piano
What do sus 2 sound like?
Open and airy. With no 3rd there is no major or minor — the 2nd rings against the root like an unresolved breath.
How are they built?
Replace the 3rd with the major 2nd: root, major 2nd, perfect 5th. "Sus" means suspended — the ear waits for the 2nd to move.
What is their job in a progression?
Color and motion over a static bass. Classic move: sus2 → major, letting the 2nd rise to the 3rd. Because it is ambiguous, it works over both major and minor progressions.
Where you'll hear them
Guitar-flavored pop and worship music live on Dsus2-style voicings; on piano it is the fastest way to make a plain triad sound modern.
The beginner mistake
Rushing the resolution. The charm of a sus chord is the moment of suspension — give the 2nd a beat of air before (or instead of) resolving it.
Fingering logic
Root-2nd is a whole step, so 1-2-5 keeps the thumb and index relaxed on the tight interval while the pinky anchors the 5th.
