What do add 9 sound like?

A major triad with shimmer. The added 9th sits a whole step above the octave and makes the chord glow without destabilizing it.

How are they built?

A plain major triad plus the 9th (the 2nd an octave up): root, 3rd, 5th, 9th. No 7th — that is what separates "add9" from a true 9th chord.

What is their job in a progression?

Pure color. It functions exactly like the major triad it decorates — tonic stays tonic, subdominant stays subdominant — just with more light on it.

Where you'll hear them

Cadd9 is the default "pretty" chord of modern pop and neo-soul intros; film composers use add9 endings when a plain triad would feel too final.

The beginner mistake

Muddying the 9th by playing it low, next to the 3rd. Keep the 9th at the top of the voicing where it shimmers instead of clashing.

Fingering logic

Four notes with a wide top: 1-2-3-5 puts the pinky on the 9th and keeps the triad compact under the first three fingers.
